SDE TEIMAN, Israel—An Israeli military investigation that has roiled the country with allegations of sexual abuse by its own ranks was set in motion by doctors who reported injuries to a Palestinian detainee that were so severe they required surgery, medical staffers familiar with the matter said.

Court hearings began last week to determine whether any of the 10 reservists initially detained by the military in a raid at the Sde Teiman detention center should face charges. Five of the reservists have been released, and five remain in custody and are being questioned, the military said.
